BEN AND LITTLE GUY

November 8, 2009 | Disabilities, Friends, Kenny, Note from mom

Ben and Little Guy came to dinner tonight (Little Guy is Bradley). Kenny works for them. Kenny takes care of them. Ben is a cool guy. Ben is very very very tall (6′5″) Ben talks a lot. Ben likes to play Beatles Guitar Hero. Ben likes our animals. Little Guy liked my puppy. Little Guy can’t feed himself. My dad helped feed him dinner and my mom helped him with dessert. I didn’t like it when mom fed him. Little Guy can’t talk. He screams, he claps his hands, he laughs, he uses sign language. Little Guy scared me when I first met him. I heard he hits and bites. He didn’t bite me today. He didn’t slap me today. He was nice today. He is a good person. He can dance. He likes to watch Barney and Blue Clues. I’m glad they came to dinner. That’s it.

Note from mom - Our son Kenny just started a job as a care giver. These two 16 year old boys live in an apartment together and the caregivers stay at the apartment with them. I decided that these boys needed a homecooked meal so we arranged for them to come visit tonight. From what Ben has told me I get the impression that he, all 6′5″ of him with red hair, might be to hard for his family to handle. He has told me he has an anger problem, but I have yet to see that side of him. If I were to guess on a disability I would say a form of Autism, but I am guessing. He is very smart when it comes to natural disasters. He knows about hurricanes, volcanoes, and tsunami. He also knew about the Titanic.  He loved all our animals and had a very gentle hand with them. He had a great time playing Beatles Guitar Hero and making up some great lyrics! He was definitely entertaining.
The Little Guy, Bradley, has “Happy Puppet syndrome” that is how he was introduced to Kenny (Angelman’s syndrome). Bless his beautiful little heart. I think he would be a lot more advanced had he received love and therapy. Love being the most important. He shrieks and claps when he’s happy and hits and bites when he is frustrated. He had a very good evening here. He got to watch Barney and Blue Clues and pet the cat. Lily gave him her “FurReal” dog to play with and he held to to it the rest of the night. He left it here when it was time to go home, but I’ll be making a stop by the toy store tomorrow. I think part of the problem at the apartment is that all his caretakers are single w/o children of their own. There is one other besides Kenny that has a sibling with a disability, but it’s not the same as a loving mom and dad. From what I understand Bradley’s parent are not supportive like Ben’s. They don’t show up, they don’t do the mom and dad thing. I could do the mom thing with Bradley, but Lily would not like it at all. It was a good day.
